Becoming Other

On the second day of the pre-workshop in Gjoa Haven, which I attended as Mx. Science, I was adopted by the community interpreter, and I was renamed "Nukatugaq" (Inuktitut for Young male polar bear cub) by the pre-workshop participants.
Being adopted, in this case, initiated a relational shift between me and the interpreter, who I had already been collaborating with closely. Whereas before this moment, we had been collaborating on the basis of transactional translations and interpretations, there was now also a more explicit element of care that was introduced to our relationship as Tiguaq (adoptee) and Tighuaghiq (adopter).
If you came here as you were tracing the case-study of Mx. Science, and would like to return to your cut, please Return towards Cut 2:"Queer performance".
If you came while following the pre-workshop trails in Gjoa Haven, and would like to return to the workshop, Return towards the drafting of a "terms of engagement".
